New Alternative Approach to Surgical Treatment of Hemroids

More than a million Americans are affected each year by hemroidsal disease. Fifty percent of these people seek medical treatment. Only 10-12 percent require surgical intervention. Many people avoid or delay treatment because of the embarrassing nature of the problem. Those patients who require surgery often experience a painful recovery. A new minimally invasive technique has emerged to treat hemroidsal disease. The procedure for prolapse and hemroids is a surgical treatment that is less painful than traditional hemroids surgery.

What are hemroids?

Hemroids are portions of the lining of the anus which become weakened and protrude. This protruding tissue contains small veins which become engorged. Hemroids can be external (on the outside of the anus) or internal (originate inside the anus).

Many treatments have been used over the years to treat this problem. Treatment is usually based on the severity of the hemroids. This alternative approach is the newest surgical procedure for hemorroidectomies. It requires the use of a circular stapler inserted into the anal canal to excise a band of hemroidsal or prolapsed tissue. This is a 15- to 30- minute procedure done on an outpatient basis. Patients experience less pain, quicker return to normal activities and fewer complications. More than 99 percent of patients have complete recovery within one week of the procedure.
